Majorca

Majorca is a popular beach holiday destination in the Mediterranean Sea. It has well developed tourist resorts in several places on the island as well as mountains in the north that are excellent for outdoor activities such as walking, hiking, biking and climbing. It has been a popular place for artists and writers for over 50 years and today several celebrities live on the island.
The main beach resorts are in Palma de Majorca, which is the largest and only true city on the island. The Castell de Bellver is on a hill overlooking the city. It was built on Muslim ruins in the 14th century and is one of the most important castles in Spain.
Visitors enjoy the Pueblo Espanol. It is an architectural museum that is designed like a small village with examples of classical Spanish architecture. The Catedral de Majorca is near the sea and a spectacular building.
In the north, Alcudia has a beach resort that is very family friendly and is also close to the mountains where there is biking and hiking along the cliffs for spectacular views. Also in the mountains are several monasteries including the Monastery of Lluc. There is also S’Abulfera, which is a large salt marsh with thousands of birds.
Another place worth visiting is the Torrent de Pareis and the Sa Calobra. There are very impressive rock formations and cliffs with deep gorges that have beautiful landscape. The hidden cove is a gem of a beach hidden by the high cliffs.
For those looking for smaller resorts than at Palma, Cala d’Or and Cala Moraia are on the east coast and have smaller beaches. Cala d’Or has a famous annual Jazz Festival and Cala Moraia is close to several golf courses. Majorca has 18 golf courses and, during the summer, free classical music concerts on the Bendinat Golf Course.
Palma is the centre for excellent restaurants. The village of Algaida also has good restaurants. One thing great for families, the waiters in Majorca are very tolerant of children. The nightlife on Majorca starts late. Most locals will not be in the clubs before midnight. Magaluf is the best place for clubbing.
Majorca is famous for its seafood Paella. It also has excellent vegetable soup. Sobrassada is a spicy sausage that is added to many dishes or eaten with bread. Other favourites from the island are a spiral shaped bun called Ensaimada for breakfast and almond cake with almond ice cream for dessert.
