Greece was a favourite holiday destination for the ancient Romans, and today, is visited by people from all over the world. They come to experience the centres of philosophy, ancient architecture and other classical monuments as well as the fantastic beaches and resorts.
Athens is the place to begin. Since the 2004 Olympics it is a clean city with an excellent subway, new highways and the beginnings of Western History. Visit the Acropolis, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and take a picnic to Filopappos Hill where visitors get a spectacular view of the city.
Santorini is one of the most popular islands for visitors. It has black sand beaches and plenty of archaeological attractions. The island has a giant lagoon and charming towns in the hills with views of the island and the sea. It is also known for the local, fresh food and wine as well as the vibrant nightlife. Santorini is famous for its romantic sunsets.
Mykonos is the island with the turquoise and white image often seen in photographs of Greece. Not only the buildings, but the sea and beaches reflect this colour scheme.
It is the most cosmopolitan of the islands. Everyone can enjoy a holiday on Mykonos including backpackers, family budget holidays and those looking for five star luxury. Mykonos offers secluded beaches in the north and party beaches in the south. It also has all the adrenalin-rush activities such as windsurfing, parasailing as well as horseback riding and jet-skiing.
Naxos has both ancient ruins and great beaches. Zeus grew up on this island and a gigantic gate to a temple that is gone still stands. Rhodes is another popular island and has a well-preserved medieval city. It has several medieval castles and lots of butterflies. It has a thriving resort life with hotels and spas.
Corfu is famous for its Venetian architecture and charming villages. Corfu Town is the capital of the island and is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Greece. There are two fortresses that guarded the city. Corfu has small villages that are virtually untouched by tourism on the slopes of the hills. It also has the long, white sand beaches for a perfect beach holiday.
Greece is not just about ancient ruins and fantastic beaches. There are 18 ski resorts in Greece. Vasilitsa is considered one of the best and is just 42 kilometres from Grevena. It also has off-piste skiing trails that travel through black pine forests.
