Fuerteventura

One of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is the place for a relaxing beach holiday. Most visitors are attracted by the rugged natural beauty and not the hyperactive tourist spots found on other of the islands. The surfing in the Atlantic is perfect year-round because of the winter swells and summer Trade Winds. Windsurfing and kite surfing are also popular all around the island.

Fuerteventura has many long, white sand beaches. Corralejo, east of the extensive sand dunes, is a popular beach, as is Playa de Sotavento de Jandia. It is on the south eastern coast and is a protected beach. Some of the beaches away from inhabited areas have naked swimming and sun bathing.

Even though Fuerteventura is becoming a popular tourist destination, with 50 kilometres of white sand beaches and 25 kilometres of black volcanic sand beaches, it is possible to regularly find a private spot during peak season.

Whale watching is another popular activity with whales as well as dolphins, turtles and marlin all commonly seen of the coast. Big-game fishermen also use Fuerteventura as a base.

The interior of the island is a protected area. It has volcanic mountains and lavascapes. Visitors can take tours and hiking is popular in the area.

Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura. It has an open-air sculpture park where there are more than 100 sculptures created by artists from around the world. Every year since 2001, there has been a Symposium of Sculpture when the artists bring their work for public show.

In the resort of Playitas on the south coast is a very popular destination for triathlon training for Europeans. They also have an annual Challenge Fuerteventura that is the half ironman distance. Also in the south, the P.W.A world windsurfing slalom and speed event is held at Sotavento.

Fuerteventura’s natural history dates back to the last volcanic eruption 7,000 years ago, but there are museums including the Betancuria Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography that are fascinating for everyone and especially history aficionados.

It has aboriginal archaeology, ceramics, a model of La Atalayita village, fossils from prehistory and objects from aboriginal culture. Along with the museum, for a break from the beach, there are golf courses, a Zoo, many marine excursions and a water park.

Seafood is the staple food on Fuerteventura along with the other Canary Islands. They also eat goat meat and make Majorero, a world famous cheese made from goat’s milk.
