Cyprus has always been the meeting point for three continents, and the ruins and culture reflect this. It also has all the requirements of a good holiday destination with gorgeous beaches, mountain peaks and accommodation to suit any budget.
Nature lovers enjoy the various landscapes of Cyprus. It has the white sand beaches, forested mountains, dramatic cliffs and rocks on the coast as well as plains. It is the stopping off point for birds from Africa, Asia and Europe making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. Near the shore dolphins, monk seals, green and loggerhead turtles are seen in season.
One of the best ways to see more of the island is on a cycle. There are hundreds of kilometres of bike trails and riders can go at their own pace and stop whenever they are interested or need a break. This is a great activity for families with older children.
Two UNESCO World Heritage sites are the Tombs of the Kings and Khirokitia. Khirokitia is an archaeological site that dates from the Neolithic age. The best preserved prehistoric site of the eastern Mediterranean, it is a collective settlement with surrounding fortifications. It offers a very clear example of how prehistoric people lived and died in a well organised society.
The tombs are underground and were carved out of the solid rock in the fourth century BCE. The burial site is for the elite of the time, not any kings.
Kourion is a Greco-Roman archaeological site with early Christian mosaics and several elegant Roman structures and early Christian buildings.
Another spot of history is the Kolossi Castle. The original castle dates from about 1210. Built by the Frankish military, it was a Crusader stronghold. The present castle was built in 1454 and housed Hospitallers and Templars.
Cyprus has 52 Blue Flag beaches and excellent scuba diving opportunities. The underwater landscape is unspoiled and untouched for thousands of years. The water is warm and clear and the marine life is abundant. There is a water park in Ayia Napa with huge water slides, a wave pool and paddle pools for the younger children.
Mediterranean style is the main food served on Cyprus. It is made with fresh local produce, meat and herbs and spices. The influence of the Middle East and Asia Minor give it a special twist. With the local wine and olive oil, it is considered both healthy and tasty.
